Therapeutic massage
Is based upon the physical movements which affect the body and not upon the
flow of ‘energy’ within it. Therapeutic massage also known as
‘Swedish massage’ involves the manipulation of the soft tissues
of the body, including skin, muscle, tendons and ligaments. It is an ancient
technique that is used by physiotherapists, physical therapists and trained
masseurs alike.
Therapeutic massage can be beneficial in treating many disorders from asthma
and circulatory problems to musculo-skeletal disorders. Massage aids relaxation
and reduces stress – and since stress is a predisposing factor in many
conditions, massage is an extremely good preventative therapy.
Massage has both psychological as well as physiological affects, as the sensation
of touch stimulates the release of endorphins in the brain which, whilst acting
to dampen down the perception of pain also induces’ a feeling of well-being
and relaxation, so lightening a mood and increasing self-esteem.
