What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a system of healing which has been practised and refined in
China and the Far East for thousands of years.
It is method of using fine needles to stimulate invisible lines of energy
‘meridians’ running beneath the surface of the body. According
to Chinese philosophy, our body’s health is dependant on the body’s
motivating energy ‘Qi’ (Chee) moving in a smooth and balanced
way through the meridians. If this becomes unbalanced then illness may result.
By the insertion of fine needles into specific points along the meridians,
an acupuncturist can stimulate the body’s own healing response and help
restore its natural balance.
What does it feel
like ? Most people’s experience of needles is of those used in injections
and blood tests. Acupuncture needles are much finer and solid rather than
hollow. When the needle is inserted the sensation is often one of a tingling,
numbness or a dull ache.
Needles are inserted for a few seconds or left in place for up to 20 seconds,
depending upon the effect required.
Many people report a feeling of deep relaxation during treatment. The number
of treatments varies according to the condition and the individual being treated.
What are the benefits of acupuncture?
Benefits often include the relief from more than one particular condition.
Many finding it can lead to an increase in energy levels, better appetite,
and sleep patterns as well as an enhanced feeling of over all well-being.
Adjunctive treatments of cupping, moxibustion or electro-acupuncture may also
be used.
What can it treat?
Acupuncture first came to wide attention in the West as a form of pain relief,
but it has traditionally been used to treat almost the entire spectrum of
illness - physical and psychological, acute and chronic.
It cannot help everyone but it has been used to treat a diverse range of problems
effectively.
